ootball is a global sport that is loved and followed the world over, irrespective of religious, race and ethnic affiliations.
In its moment, football has shown it can bring everyone together and make them believe in the same thing at the same time, without much thought about differences in religious beliefs, race and ethnicity.
In Nigeria, it is the same. And while you would naturally want to associate football with those who are or have been involved in it in one way or another, the fact is, not only those who have something to do with football are interested and follow the game in the country.
And then there is the category of celebrities who follow the game almost as fanatically as direct football stakeholders.
We take a look at 10 Nigerian football celebrities who are huge football fans and the clubs they support. Enjoy.
Dr. Sid (Musician)
The “Doro-Singer’ is a big Manchester United fan and you need to follow him on twitter to understand how much he loves the Red Devils. He is often tweeting about United whenever they play, and often end up disappointed whenever they fail to win, especially now that they have gone “all way from sixth to sixth” on the Premier League table. LOL.
Ruggedman (Musician)
The rapper, just like Dr. Sid, is also a staunch Manchester United supporter. “Ruggedy Baba”, as he is fondly called, often wears United jerseys, and also tweets much about them whenever they are in action. He never hides his passion for the Red Devils.
Olamide (Musician)
“Badoo” is a big Barcelona fan. You can imagine how he must have felt on Wednesday when Barca pulled that impossible comeback against PSG. One guesses he must have been on some shakiti bobolevels after the game, in celebration of their progress to the quarterfinals.
P-Square (Musicians)
The singing duo will probably be the only Nigerian celebrities who support Chelsea and also have some current and past Chelsea players as their fans. Peter, one half of the duo, frequents Stamford Bridge and takes photos with the Blues stars. With how much they follow Antonio Conte’s side, you can’t help but feel it’s all because of Ifunanya.
AY (Comedian)
The highly successful comedian is friends with several Nigerian footballers, and often plays kick-abouts with them whenever they are in the country. He doesn’t always flaunt it, but we know he is a Chelsea fans. Can I hear you say ohon ohon?
Don Jazzy (Music Producer/Singer)
“Doro Boss” is a big Manchester United fan. He never hides it and with the deep pitch of his voice, you would think he has been shouting out instructions to Paul Pogba to justify his huge price tag. LOL.
Banky W (Musician)
Mr. Capable is a Gunner but with the rate at which Arsenal have been breaking hearts, you would think the soulful singer is considering being a ‘goner’. But we understand he is a massive Arsenal fan, and would stay on, even if Arsene Wenger takes them through another 10-2 defeat and continues to do them strong tin.
Davido (Musician)
David Adeleke (that’s his real name, if you didn’t know), is a big Chelsea fan. ‘Omo Baba olowo’ is a regular visitor to the Blues’ home at Stamford Bridge, and only weeks ago, took photos with the Chelsea squad after a routine Premier League win. With Davido’s ebullient style and how Chelsea seem to be running away with the title, you might be tempted to sing ‘E ma da mi duro’.
DJ Cuppy (DJ)
